I woke up, had my usual omelet, sat down in front of my
laptop in my favorite spot, and started with my usual day. You know what else
is usual now- my groggy mind and the rising COVID-19 infected numbers...
It has now become a
scoreboard. I don’t know whether to be amazed by the media’s creativity or feel
sad about the people whose death made them be seen for the last time as a part
of a huge data set.
And the scarier part? - There is a lot of “we don’t knows”.
How can it be cured? We don’t know. How is it affecting different places
differently? We don’t know. Why are some countries like India having low
critical cases? What are the actual
death rates in India? How many people are infected and probably immune to it?
We surely don’t know.
A shortage of
healthcare staff and a lack of a system to be immediately implemented in the
wake of such a pandemic are revealing the ugly truth about the failing healthcare
systems in the countries of the world. Of course, world leaders are trying
to desperately tackle the situation. But it is like throwing a few buckets of
water into the fire burning the whole house down. Hope, the world gets its fire
extinguishers soon.
And the inevitable economic crisis that we all have to face
in the coming months which already started with people getting a percentage of
their pay and a few of us losing our jobs. Migrant workers in India having to
endure a cruel journey of desperation back to their homes in the interiors of
the country. Many of the other problems are going to be acute- increase in the
number of people battling hunger, climate change policies are going to come
second, mass vaccination campaigns are temporarily suspended and the list goes
on.

And we thought “mankind is invincible”.
The thing left for us to do is, stick to our usual breakfast
and usual work from our favorite spots at home, keep a safe distance of minimum
1 meter, wear a mask mandatorily, eye gear and gloves if possible, wash hands
frequently and be prepared to be in this state of affairs for a few more months...
or probably years? We
don’t know.
